RTI Biologics Launched Fresh-Stored Osteochondral Allograft
ALACHUA, Fla. – RTI Biologics, Inc. (RTI) (Nasdaq: RTIX), the Florida-based processor of orthopedic, dental, hernia and other biologic implants, announces the launch of its fresh-stored osteochondral (OC) allograft line at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting in San Francisco this week.
Fresh-stored OC allografts provide mature hyaline cartilage with subchondral bone for resurfacing articular cartilage damage in the knee. The graft is cleansed, processed and preserved to provide a safe, high-quality allograft with the highest level of chondrocyte viability possible. RTI uses expedited release criteria to maintain fresh-stored graft utility. Like all RTI tissue, extensive donor screening beyond FDA and AATB requirements is conducted. In addition to serological testing, microbiological testing is used throughout the process to screen for potential contamination.
“Fresh osteochondral allografts are advantageous for addressing large chondral and osteochondral lesions because the procedure allows for hyaline restoration,” said Akbar Nawab, MD, Ellis and Badenhausen Orthopedics, University of Louisville, Department of Orthopedics, Division of Sports Medicine and Knee Reconstruction. “Native architecture can be recreated with restoration of large bone defects and re-establishment of the subchondral plate-cartilage couple, with implantation of viable chondrocytes. Host to allograft bone integration by creeping substitution allows for early weight bearing and predictable healing.”
